  Chapter One

Dante Morgan groaned as he opened his eyes that morning. He was slightly hungover, well maybe more than slightly hungover. The party last night was great and he’d had a great time. But this morning, he understood he wasn’t getting any younger and he just couldn’t do what he’d done ten years ago, or hell, even five years ago.

At forty five with all his brothers married and starting families, he wasn’t ready yet to give up his freedom. He wouldn’t marry any one of the women he usually went out with. They were good time girls and he knew you didn’t marry good time girls. You might sleep with them but you didn’t marry them. His daddy taught his sons that you only marry once and you pick a girl your mother would approve of. His brothers all picked women their mother would have loved but Dante wasn’t ready to settle down yet.

His brothers often teased him that he would die before he went out with a decent woman and he had to agree with them. He would often tease them back because their women were about half their age. They pointed out that didn’t seem to matter to the loves of their lives. It might even be the Morgan curse, to fall in love with a woman half your age.

Dante snorted but secretly agreed with them. They all seemed to attract women in their twenties rather than their thirties. They all seemed to be the loves of his brother’s lives though.

His last girl he’d gone out with, Abby was a real piece of work and made no secret about it. She was pretty, if you liked fake everything. Bleached hair, never seen without her makeup, fake nails, fake tits and an attitude that never quit. She thought just because she was beautiful she could step over everyone else. They dated maybe two weeks before she demanded he take her shopping. Dante wasn’t stupid. She wanted him for his money not for himself and that was a turn off as far as he was concerned. Abby didn’t work at all, depended on first, her father, now her brother.

He didn’t need that in his life. Two weeks was about as much as he could take of her. When he told her he wouldn’t see her again, needless to say... she hadn’t taken it well. She made a scene, thinking she was everyman’s wet dream and finally, he turned and walked away from her which just seemed to piss her off more. She threatened to set her brother on his ass and Dante shook his head.

The more he thought about her the more he knew he never should have gone out with her to begin with. Hell, she hadn’t even been all that good in bed, he shook his head and sat up, ready to start his day

Her brother was another POS. Jed Stroker thought he owned the track. He was nothing more than a poser, not a real racer and Dante knew he had to cheat to win but he was sneaky about it and that made him dangerous. He started racing when his dad was still alive. His father, Liam was a true racer and Dante had had the pleasure of racing against him a time or two. Then about eighteen months ago, Liam crashed in a race Jed was in. Jed didn’t even stop but after his dad was pushed through the wall, which set off a domino effect of race cars going off in every direction, Jed had driven through the melee and right to the finish line.

When the judges reviewed the footage of the race, it was determined that Liam had been hit from the back intentionally. Only problem was they couldn’t tell which car actually caused the accident that killed him and injured three other drivers in the aftermath.

The actually had no choice but to give the trophy and the winning purse to Jed. Jed showed absolutely no remorse or tears at his father death and the day they buried him many of the other drivers made comments on that.

Since that day, Jed had been trying to make a name for himself on the track. With every win, his head got bigger and bigger. He was stepping on toes he didn’t want to be stepping on and burning bridges that shouldn’t be burnt. Dante just shook his head at the stupidity of some men.

Looking out his window, he saw the eastern sky lighting up as the sun peeked over the horizon. It didn’t matter how late he stayed out, his body was programed to get his ass up at dawn. Every day he opened his eyes, he was ready for another adventure. That was another thing his body was programmed for, thinking each and every day could be an adventure. Some days, those adventures were nothing more than getting through the day but more often, those adventures turned out to be awesome.

Dante was a racer, it didn’t matter two wheels or four, he loved the speed of driving down the road at an accelerated rate. He’d discovered this fact about himself when his brother Bowie had challenged him to race a go cart down the hill behind their house. He’d been twelve and Bowie was ten. Never one to turn down a challenge, especially when speed was involved he took the bet.

Each of them built their own go cart and the day of the race, Mountain stood at the top of the hill while Byron, Chance and their father waited at the bottom. When Mountain dropped the flag, Dante flew.

Bowie’s cart was good but his was better and he won the race. That was the day he found what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He found his purpose, something that gave him value.

The exhilaration he felt that day had stayed with him and he still got a heart pounding reaction every time he was on the track. He admitted it only to himself maybe but he was an adrenalin junkie. He couldn’t help it. Nor could he change it. He just plain didn’t think he could ever find anything to replace that feeling he got, that heart pounding reaction.

Pushing the covers off, he got out of bed and stretched. Standing six foot five inches tall when he raised his hands his fingers could almost touch the ceiling. He pulled on some clothes and sat down again to pull on his boots.

When he was completely dressed, he stood up and gathered his long hair behind his head and wrapped a tie around it, mostly to keep it out of his face. He looked in the mirror and noticed for the first time in a long time just how long his hair was getting to be. It was well past his shoulders.

Then he looked again, closer this time and noticed his eyes were looking tired and their brightness seemed a little on the dim side. He shrugged and decided his late nights were starting to show.

Picking up his cell phone, he checked the time. Shit, he was late. Mountain liked to start the day at six a.m. sharp and now, he was three minutes late.

He grabbed his keys, slid his phone into his back pocket, and stomped down the steps to the common rooms. They had taken over two warehouses putting the shop in one and converting the outer one into housing units for everyone.

Mountain and Izzy had their own house now, but they had lived here for a while, Chance and Quinn had built their own home as
well, along with Byron and Kelly. The only ones left here were Boone, Izzy’s brother, Bowie and Shayna and Danny, Shayna’s brother.

When he got downstairs, Danny took one look at Dante and had to smirk. “Oh brother, are you in trouble now.”

Dante raised an eyebrow and didn’t say a word as he poured coffee in a thermos and left the warehouse to walk across the parking lot to go inside the shop.

When he walked through the door, all work stopped and the silence was noticeable. Dante looked around and saw his brother’s expression. “What?”

  “You’re late,” Mountain grumbled.

“Yeah, all of five minutes.” Dante growled.

“Son, you need to get your life together better.” Mountain shook his head. “You also need to find yourself a decent woman, not another painted up, fake doll like Abby.”

Dante snorted. “Yeah, she was a trip man, I can tell you that. We went out for almost two weeks and then she insisted I take her shopping as she was in need of a new wardrobe for summer.”

Bowie whistled low and shook his head. “That girl was a menace from day one.”

“You got that right,” Dante fully agreed with his brother. “When I told her I didn’t think we fit anymore, she threw an absolute fit right there at the diner. She ranted and raved at me until she was almost screaming the roof off. Then she threatened to tell her brother on me and he would set me straight.”

Mountain frowned. “Jed Stroker? He’s her brother isn’t he?”

  Dante nodded.

Mountain looked over at the brothers standing around. “That boy is a bigger menace than she is. He don’t like to play fair if he can cheat to win.”

“It’s too bad we can’t catch his slimy ass. I know it was him messing with my equipment. I almost crashed in the last race.” Dante looked back at them all.

“There was no evidence he had anything to do with those accidents,” Byron pointed out.

“I know but I still feel it in my gut,” Dante muttered.

“You aren’t the only one,” Mountain admitted. “The judges and pit crews are all watching him and his crew as well. Those three good ole boys he hangs with are trouble with a capital T.”
