  “Probably because after all these years, Gerry told his dad he wanted nothing to do with him.” River nodded. “Melanie called us three years ago. She said Virgil found her and the boy and he demanded the boy speak to him. When he was finished she said, Virgil was pissed as hell and hit Gerry. She stopped him from beating her son with a gun but told him to forget coming back. Gerry would be better off not ever knowing his father and she wouldn’t let him hurt him again. The next day, she and Gerry packed up and moved away. My dad gave her money to leave on and told her to hide him well.” River hung her head and tears dripped down her face.

  “I’m sorry sweet girl,” Slammer whispered

  River leaned onto his shoulder and gave herself a moment to cry. Then she sat up and wiped her tears away. Taking a deep breath, she nodded. “Am I free to go now?” she whispered. She couldn’t look beyond Slammer’s face. She just couldn’t.

  Slammer nodded.

  Sniffling through tears, River got up and went back to the kitchen.

  Slammer glared at Shotgun.

  After the men all got more guns and ammo, Shotgun directed them to where they were supposed to be. He was sick of this bastard already. They needed to find a way to stop him. He would love to set the man on fire himself.

  He was to take second shift after he got a nap, so he found Audrey and made sure his daughter would be settled in the saferoom with the other women. In fact, River needed to be safe. “Have you seen River?” he asked Audrey.

  She shrugged. “She said she needed to be alone. This all has her shook up pretty good.” She stared at him. “I know this might be...”she paused. Then she squared her shoulders and looked him in the eye. “I never thought you were the kind of man to... do what you must have done.”

  He raised a brow at her. “Oh?” He crossed his arms over his wide chest. “And what did I do?”

  Audrey narrowed her eyes at him. “You played that little girl. That’s what you did. A girl who’d just lost her whole family. You should have left her alone...if all you were gonna do was...LEAVE HER ALONE!” She huffed out air and then turned her back on him and finished doing the dishes.

  Shotgun stood there for a full minute and then shook his head and walked away. She was right...he had no defense. He got hit with a brick when he’d had that woman and it shook him up good. It was no excuse though and he knew it.

  He went into the main room and looked around. No River. Now his heart was banging in his chest as he realized that he couldn’t find her. What if she got out? What if Virgil... He shook these thoughts away but his chest felt so tight with anxiety. He wasn’t used to feeling all this but he pushed that aside, he needed to find her and now.

  Panicked, he went down the hall and looked into his room. She probably wouldn’t be there, but he needed to be sure.

  He looked around and saw that her pack was gone. Dammit!

  He ran out and down the hallway. He looked in room after room. His heart rate was so high it pounded in his ears. If anything happened to her...What Shotgun? What? He refused to believe she was gone but he was getting frantic.

  He then shouted her name out, “River!” He looked around as doors opened and people were muttering. He could give a fuck. “RIVER!” he again shouted as his voice boomed through the clubhouse.

  “What?”

  He spun around and she came up from beneath a table where she must have been sleeping on two chairs against the back wall.

  Shotgun marched over. “Why are you sleeping here?”

  She blinked her eyes up at him. “What?”

  He scooped her up and grabbed her pack from the chairs. “You belong in my room.”

  “Oh, no!” she yelled. “You can’t just have sex with me then throw me away like you were ashamed of me. Then come back for seconds!” She hit him on the shoulders with her fists. “Put me down, you asshole!”

  Her hits were like gnats flying around him, so he paid no attention. He also ignored the stares and the mumblings of the men he had obviously woken up and carried her to his room.

  He set her down and shut the door.

  River was huffing and puffing as her face was flushed red.

  He raised his hands up. “Please just listen for a moment? Please?’

  She braced her hands on her hips and gave a short but angry nod.

  “Ok. I acted like an ass. I...”

  She was nodding her head in total agreement.

  He grinned at this. “I know. Ok? I know what I did.” His smiled faded. “It’s just that... damn woman, you floored me. You absolutely blew me away. I never felt that dammed good before. Not with any woman. I got... scared okay?”

  Her hands dropped from her hips, as she looked stunned. “You weren’t dumping me?”

  “I never got the chance to adjust to even dump you River. I think you are the woman for me... I just couldn’t handle the fact is all.”

  She blinked her eyes at him and looked confused. “So, you are saying that because you felt a lot for me, you rejected me?”

  He sighed and pushed his fingers through his hair. “I guess?”

  “You guess?” River looked angry again. “Look, I wasn’t thinking picket fence and a ring on my finger, Shotgun. In fact, I never planned on any of this. So, you do not have to feel bad, ok?” She stepped around him to the door.

  He reached out and grabbed her. Pulling her close, he spoke to her lips, “I would feel bad. So bad if I lost you. Don’t leave.”

  She stared at his mouth as if she wanted to taste him as badly as he wanted to taste her. “You won’t humiliate me again like that?”

  “No, I won’t.”

  “You will treat me fairly and if you are done with me that is fine, but please tell me privately, ok?”

  Shotgun lowered his lips to hers. “Woman, I don’t think I will ever be done with you.” He then kissed her deeply and thoroughly.
